Developer group labscommunity has released npu-driver, an open-source prototype that renders the Windows 11 desktop using a neural processing unit (NPU) instead of the system’s GPU. The Apache 2.0-licensed code is available on GitHub and has been tested on Intel Panther Lake systems.

The project explores whether an NPU can handle desktop composition end to end without requiring changes to applications or the Windows compositor. According to the project description, it can render the desktop and windows such as Notepad and Edge. It can also switch back to GPU rendering when requested or if a fault occurs.

Performance remains the main limitation. The prototype currently refreshes the screen at around 2 to 3 Hz, well below its 30 Hz target. The developers describe it as a research prototype rather than a finished product.

A Reddit post attributed to someone from the labscommunity team says the approach reduced 3D GPU usage from 3.4% to 0.6% in a test, potentially leaving more GPU capacity available for other tasks. The prototype is being developed on a Panther Lake laptop; the source says those Intel processors use NPU 5 architecture and offer 45 to 50 TOPS of performance.
