Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 composer Jason Graves says creating music for multiplayer meant understanding how differently the mode feels from the campaign. In an interview with TechRadar Gaming, he said the first step was to play a lot of multiplayer.
“It’s a completely different vibe from the campaign,” Graves said. While the campaign moves at a steadier pace, multiplayer music needs to make players feel that anything could happen at any moment. He said he aimed for “forward momentum and pure adrenaline.”
Rather than assign a fixed piece of music to every map, Graves said the team planned the score around emotional intensity and timing. That approach leaves room to adapt as the mode gains updates and expansions, he explained.
Graves described the music’s identity as a combination of sounds, including aggressive percussion, distorted electronics and organic textures. He also said he likes processing real-world sounds electronically, particularly when the result is difficult to identify, helping create the energy and unpredictability he associates with multiplayer.
