Philips Hue has made its Custom AI Behaviors available in the Hue app, although the feature is limited to owners of the Hue Bridge Pro. It lets users describe how they want their lights to behave in natural language, after which the AI creates and adds the corresponding automation to the app.

One possible use is asking selected lights to turn on at sunset while applying different color themes over time. However, testing reported by HueBlog found that the assistant did not always follow the request accurately. In one example, it turned on every light instead of only those specified. When asked to correct the behavior, the AI reportedly returned an error message rather than fixing it.

The main limitation is that users cannot currently edit the behaviors generated by the assistant. This means that if the AI misunderstands a request or produces an unwanted result, there is no manual adjustment option comparable to the editing tools available for shortcuts on Apple devices.

Hue founder and head of technology George Yianni previously described natural-language controls as a significant development for the platform. According to his explanation, the AI translates users’ requests into a programming language designed to run automations on the Hue Bridge.

Custom AI Behaviors and the previously introduced SpatialAware scene optimization both require the Hue Bridge Pro. The Hue app also includes updates for other Hue users, including a simpler Screen Sync setup and improved scene recommendations. The app is available on iOS and Android.
