OpenAI is preparing to combine usage allowances for ChatGPT and its Codex coding assistant, according to the company’s updated documentation. Plus, Pro and Business subscribers will have a shared gauge rather than separate limits for the two services.

More demanding tasks will use more of the allowance, while ordinary Instant conversations will remain outside it. OpenAI says most subscribers should not need to wait for limits to reset more often than they do now, but it has not published the size of the new allowances or detailed how different activities will affect them.

The change is tied to OpenAI’s plans to bring ChatGPT Work’s more autonomous capabilities into the main ChatGPT experience. Users will be able to request complex projects directly in a conversation, with those tasks drawing on the same resources as Codex and other eligible ChatGPT use.

That could mean research, advanced reasoning and coding compete for a shared pool. While keeping Instant chats exempt offers some protection for routine conversations, more demanding reasoning tasks will count toward the limit. OpenAI has not specified when the new accounting will take effect, beyond the source report’s reference to changes expected in December.

Some users have already criticized the proposal online, with comments on a Reddit thread describing it as a reason to cancel a subscription. The report also notes that OpenAI previously reversed a proposed reduction to Pro 200 usage limits after subscribers objected, while increasing allowances for other plans.

The shared limits reflect OpenAI’s effort to make ChatGPT serve both everyday users and people handling substantial professional projects. But without clear figures, subscribers cannot yet assess whether the combined allowance will make their plans more useful or leave them with fewer resources for the tasks they rely on.
