Some Grok Bot users recently found that they were reaching their usage limits much faster than usual. Elon Musk later confirmed that the limits had been intentionally tightened, saying the cost of operating the AI agent was “unsustainably high relative to revenue.”

The explanation came after an X user asked Musk to reset their Grok Bot allowance. The user said they had unexpectedly reached the 100% limit four days before it was due to reset, despite normally not using the full allowance. Musk replied that the decision was driven by the cost of serving the service.

Other X users also expressed frustration, claiming that their usage percentages had increased while they were asleep or had not been using Grok Bot. Reported changes included allowances moving from 50% to 100%, 35% to 78%, and 70% to 100%.

The episode highlights ongoing concerns about the financial sustainability of AI services. Users of AI tools can sometimes consume significantly more computing resources than their subscription payments cover, raising questions about how providers can maintain current pricing and usage levels.

Some users criticized the change as an indirect reduction in Grok Bot’s features and availability. The reported throttling suggests that tighter caps or higher prices could become more common as AI companies seek to bring operating costs more closely in line with revenue.
