Proton has published version 8.0.0 of its iOS app on GitHub, but the update has not yet appeared on the App Store. The release introduces Proton protocols, a new VPN engine designed to improve stability and resistance to censorship.
The new architecture replaces wireguard-go with libpvpnclient, Proton’s own WireGuard implementation written in Rust. The company says the change should make updates faster, reduce platform-specific bugs and help it respond more quickly when censorship methods change. Proton also says the new core provides a foundation for exploring post-quantum encryption, which remains a planned feature.
Version 8.0 also enables an advanced kill switch on iPhone and iPad. Unlike a standard kill switch, which blocks internet access if the VPN connection drops, the advanced option prevents internet access unless the device is connected to Proton VPN and remains active after a restart. Proton cautions that some DNS requests from Apple services may still bypass the VPN.
The update also allows users to access local network devices, such as printers, and use Apple CarPlay while either kill switch is enabled. An interactive globe map is also listed among the features on the way.
Proton has not given a release date for the App Store version. Although the final 8.0.0 build is available on GitHub, Apple’s review process could affect when it reaches users.
