NBN Co says Australia’s broadband network is prepared for the increased traffic expected when Grand Theft Auto VI launches. The company expects the game’s week-long preload to help distribute downloads, reducing the likelihood of a sharp spike on a single day or during a particular hour.

A major game release previously coincided with a record NBN traffic peak of 32.91 terabits per second, around 30% above baseline traffic. NBN Co did not identify the game, but said the peak included almost 8Tbps of additional demand during the busiest hour.

The company works with content distributors to model the impact of major releases and spread downloads over longer periods. For GTA VI, NBN Co expects that approach to temper the peak demand, while still potentially producing a record total volume of downloads across the game’s seven-to-eight-day preload and release period.

The game’s download is listed as 212GB. NBN Co’s confidence in its network does not guarantee maximum speeds for every household, however: home Wi-Fi equipment and internet plans can affect download performance, and game distribution servers may also face heavy demand. The company recommends checking router placement and age, and whether a current internet plan meets household needs. સપ
