Meta plans to wind down support for its Quest 2 and Quest Pro virtual reality headsets at the end of 2027. The company says the devices are reaching the end of feature development, although owners will retain access to apps they have purchased and the Meta VR app store will remain available to them.

The final Quest operating system release compatible with the headsets is expected to be version 2.13, due in March 2027. Meta says it will continue issuing quarterly security patches and critical bug fixes through the end of 2027. New app submissions for the devices will close in December 2027.

Existing apps will remain available to find, buy, download and play, and developers can continue sending updates to Quest 2 and Quest Pro users. Cross-play with Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets is also set to continue. Meta says apps will not be removed from the store because of the support change.

However, Meta will no longer test new operating system and software development kit releases on the older headsets. Developers will need to check that their apps continue to work as intended, and the company has advised them to consider how many users still rely on the devices. Developers ending support for an app or service should provide at least 180 days’ notice if users could lose access to content or services.

The announcement sets a timeline for the end of updates and maintenance, but does not say that the headsets will stop working when support ends. Owners will still be able to use them, though the lack of critical bug fixes after 2027 may affect their experience.
