Amazon has started rolling out its “Ask this book” feature to certain Kindle models, expanding an AI tool that was previously limited to the iOS Kindle app in the US.

The feature has reportedly appeared on the Kindle Colorsoft 2026 and Kindle Paperwhite 2026, according to user reports cited by The eBook Reader and Reddit users. Other 2026 Kindle models may also receive it, although Amazon has not confirmed the full list of compatible devices.

“Ask this book” is included in software version 5.20.2. Amazon has not published release notes or provided details about the rollout, so it is not yet clear whether earlier Kindle generations will be supported. Reports so far have focused on 2026 models, and availability outside the US also remains uncertain.

The update is being delivered gradually, with no current option to force the installation. Users can keep Wi-Fi enabled so their Kindles can check for the software update. The feature has not appeared on every device, including at least one 2024 Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition in the UK.

Once available, “Ask this book” can answer questions about a supported title’s plot and characters based on the reader’s progress. It can provide information about the portion already read or address the entire book if the reader accepts potential spoilers.

The feature has also drawn criticism from some users, who have described it as invasive and said they dislike its presence in the reading experience.
